Message from President

Dr. Hisashi Hozumi
The world today is in the midst two major issues that are stirring great concern which are global warming and growing populations of older people. In all regions, and in large majority of countries, the population is growing older presenting opportunities and challenges in the 21st century. Currently, Japan is known to be one of the fastest ageing countries and the world is focusing on how Japan is dealing with the challenges of this demographic transformation. With the combined efforts of NGOs and NPOs, the civil society and individuals, Japan can be a leader to combat the challenges of its fast growing elderly population.
Friends of IFA (FOIFA) is one of such NGOs created in October, 2007 based in Akita City, Japan. The role of FOIFA is to advocate for policies and programs that will promote the development of a society for all ages. In order to achieve these goals and objectives, FOIFA has been working together while also maintaining a very close relationship with the International Federation on Ageing (IFA).
At the moment, the activities of FOIFA are focused on knowledge and information exchange both regionally and internationally working with NPOs & NGOs both in Japan as well as in other countries around the world. These activities include participating in workshops, symposiums, forums and global conferences. In addition, the organization provides support to baby organizations especially in developing countries.
One major achievement of FOIFA is the hosting of IFA's "International Forum on Ageing in Place & Age Friendly Cities" in October, 2009 in Akita City that brought together about 300 participants from 22 countries.
To further expand its scope of activities, FOIFA has established a foundation called "Support Foundation for Elderly People in Emergency Situation". The foundation will raise funds to provide direct assistance to elderly in emergency situations.
We invite you all to join us in realizing these goals.
Thank you.
